I became a big fan of Christopher Hitchens rather late in his sadly curtailed life so I am still catching up with much of his writing I have very much enjoyed this collection of essays and reviews It is interesting to read his take on other books and writers as the way he examines analyses and criticises them so neatly reflects the clear thinking he brought to so much of his own writing He brings his usual wit humour and precision to bear and I can't help feeling that some of the books he reviews might better have been written by him as he presents us with apparently reliable knowledge and valuable opinion than the authorsIt is interesting how despairing Mr Hitchens seems to be about the modern day body politic in the US while still being a great believer in the fundamental rightness of the American constitution He offers no easy or indeed any solutions to this problem Some of the abstruse references to people and events that he assumes everyone is familiar with reuired me to make diversions into research topics I was reading the Kindle edition so could easily follow a subject elsewhere which were very rewarding and worth the timeAt the end of this book I felt that I had been both informed and entertained in short educated about many interesting subjects and had been given some insight into and brought a little closer to the character of Mr Hitchens himself I just wish I could have known the man and passed some time with him
