ePub é Movies And Other Things õ Shea Serrano

Shea Serrano is back and his new book Movies And Other Things combines the fury of a John Wick shootout the sly brilliance of Regina George holding court at a cafeteria table and the sheer power of a Denzel monologue all into one Movies And Other Things is a book about uite frankly movies and other things One of the chapters for example answers which race Kevin Costner was able to white savior the best because did you know that he white saviors Mexicans in McFarland USA and white saviors Native Americans in Dances with I used to read the musician Mike Doughty's blog I don't remember much of what he wrote but there is one post that sticks out in my mind his review of Malcolm Gladwell's book OutliersNow I had read Outliers and thought this 10000 hours of practice success thing makes some sense However my opinion changed after I read Doughty's review He had a specific objection to Gladwell's book in one chapter Gladwell claims that the Beatles' success was a result of all the hours upon hours they spent playing together in Hamburg Germany before they signed their record contract a claim that made sense to me But Doughty called bullshit on that explaining that the main thing that playing a lot of gigs back to back will do is tighten up a band's rhythm section but all of that tightening would have been negated when they got back to England and fired Pete Best in favor of Ringo Starr Doughty went onto explain that the thing that made the Beatles so successful was that they were incredible songwriters and spending thousands of hours of playing cover songs is not a good way to become a great songwriter in your own right He objected to the idea that there was one universal metric that could explain why one person was a great songwriter and another person was not In fact he so strenuously objected to Gladwell's facile example that he retroactively uestioned everything he'd read in other Gladwell books claims which he had initially taken at face value but which were in all likelihood as flimsy as the Beatles claim that he'd seen right through because he happened to know a lot about songwritingI bring all of this up because I'm having a bit of a Doughty ish reaction to Movies and other things I've read Shea Serrano's previous books on rap music and basketball and I generally enjoyed them However I'm not a great scholar on either subject so it was easier for me to take what he was saying in those books at face value But I'm a cinephile through and through I watch at least a movie a day I listen mostly to movie podcasts most of the books I read are about movies and so a lot of what Serrano says in this book really stuck out to me as sort of inane? Right around the time this book was released Serrano did an interview where he explained that he didn't really like watching movies from before 1980 because they were still figuring out the artform until then and this book really does feel like it was written by someone whose knowledge of film history is limited to what's been shown on repeat on basic cable in the last twenty years Sometimes he has something interesting to say about a given topic but the topic selection is so shallow that it really leaves a lot to be desired This book isn't so egregious that it's going to cause me to completely re evaluate Serrano's writing I can't go full Doughty here because Serrano isn't making incorrect factual claims he's just expressing viewpoints that I don't fully agree with which is a completely different thing but this book does have moments of such intense wackness that now I'm having to reconsider whether I was overly generous to Basketball and other things because I just don't know enough about basketball to know whether or not Karl Malone is fierce than a bear

eBook Movies And Other Things

Movies And Other ThingsSpecifically for rom coms the most underrated movie genre of all And another of the chapters for a final example is actually a triple chapter that serves as an NBA style draft of the very best and most memorable moments in gangster movies Many many things happen in Movies And Other Things some of which funny others of which are sad a few of which are insightful and all of which are handled with the type of care and dedication to the smallest details and pockets of pop culture that only a book by Shea Serrano can provid As a huge fan of moves and of talking obsessively about movies I had a feeling I would enjoy this book I loved the attention to detail and precision with which the author described the things he loved about all these movies Even when I didn’t necessarily agree with him I was struck by the passion he poured into each chapter It was both hilarious and insightful However some chapters are hard to enjoy if you haven’t seen most of the movies he’s talking about I found myself having to skip a few of them But on balance this book was a really fun read especially when I lost power for four days and couldn’t actually watch any movies or TV
