May 1982 affectionately became known as THE GREAT WHITE WHALE The Canberra was pivotal to the Success of operations She safely disembarked 5000 troops amongst The Falkland Islands and returned over 4000 POW’s to Argentina The human element is portrayed in the book the reality of war and its effec I enjoyed this book so much I am reading it over againI am absolutely amazed the Canberra returned in one piece after such an ordeal At times I felt I was there with them as Alan's portrayal of events flowed with a convincing ease A thoroughly enjoyable read written by a very compassionate and caring man I knew very little of the importance of the Merchant Navy during the Falklands war as they were rarely mentioned but with out those brave civilian seamen aboard ships taken up from trade I doubt very much the Armed Forces would of been capable of carrying out such an operation 8000 miles from the UK ? The Merchant Navy did not receive the recognition they deserved during WW2 nothing has changed Brave men Brilliant Book
